Friday Feedback: Competitive Collaboration

Would you ever collaborate with a competitor?

It seems counter to everything that one would think about in business, especially as it relates to advertising. However, there can be great wisdom that can be gleaned when you engage someone you might be competing with. We’re not advocating divulging secrets or giving out sensitive information but rather casual discussion and conversation with your colleagues. In this climate, there could potentially be some upside and a more “united we thrive” opportunity if you take the time to converse with your competitors.

We’re saying this because we do just that.

We converse with our competitors. We talk to media folk. We engage the creative community as much as we can.

Why?

Because every bit of wisdom we glean could be beneficial. We don’t always use it, but it’s just good for us to know — and in some cases, sock away for a rainy day. The bottom line is that, even though we are in a competitive business, the sum of its parts can function better when we are all succeeding.

The reality is that there is all kinds of business opportunity out there. We all often get caught in the vacuums of our own worlds. It’s very easy to do. But, when you look at the challenges you face through a different lens, you may see some things that could put you in the right direction. You could see a new way of thinking. You could ultimately break a cycle of frustration and put your business on a path that can be both enjoyable and rewarding.

And, believe it or not, it may start with a casual conversation with your competitor.
